Organic Farming Of Perfume Is A Fantastic Idea, This Farmer Earns Lakhs Of Money Every Year
Perfume is a luxury commodity, and it is one of those things that makes us feel good.
The fate of Indian perfume organic farming is still to be determined, but some farmers are adapting traditional skills to grow fragrance plants and extract oils for the industry.
One such farmer is from the district of Sangli in Maharashtra. Rohit Mule is a farmer who started perfume organic farming with its nursery plantation by planting up to 8000-10,000 flower plants in his nursery.
The perfume organic farming is authentic for further usage and can grow in local regions.
Many people have their favorite fragrance but have little knowledge of the process or how perfume organic farming is done.
Mad4India had the chance to interview Rohit Mule to learn more about perfume organic farming. He gave knowledgeable insight to those who wish to know about perfume organic farming and perfume manufacturing industry.
Q – Mohit, please tell us something about your background.
I was a farmer in my district in Sangli, Maharashtra. I used to cultivate crops on my farm, but it was going on a loss due to unwavering rainfall, and it was not gaining profit.
It was when I figured out that I wanted to do something different. Around two years ago, in 2019, I started Geranium (flower plant) organic farming. It was then the journey of perfume organic farming started.
Q – Why did you choose perfume Organic farming?
I figured that perfume organic farming was an industry many people were not exploring. It was a good opportunity for me to start there.
Q- Why did you choose the Geranium plant, and how does it grow?

The best thing about the Geranium plant is that it can be grown in local regions, unlike Lavender or Lily, which have their own seasons and times. Also, through the shrubs, we can create a new plant in our organic farming plantation. and it’s growing incredibly well across India. The Geranium plant gives more oil extraction, which is also good for health.
Also, once you cut the leaves and leave the stem, it will regrow into a new plant, and then you can cut it after three months. If you plant one Geranium plant, it can be used for four years organic farming in the organic farming project.
Q – Would you please tell us the manufacturing process of perfume organic farming?

Yes, it takes effort and time to complete the whole process of perfume organic farming. The first step is to grow the Geranium plant through the shrubs in our nursery plantation. Then, after four levels of fertilizers and nourishment, we harvest it. After that, we have to extract the oil of Geranium. The oil recovery is comparatively low.
After that, we take the leaves of the Geranium plant on our site in a truck.
Then, at the extraction site unit, we have two 500 kg tanks, which we fill with the cutting leaves. Approximately, 600–800 kg of leaves can be filled in one tank. Then, we connect the boiler with the vessel that contains the leaves. The boiler has water, which generates steam that evaporates through the condenser. The condenser converts the steam into liquid, and that separates the oil.

At the other end, we have an oil separator where the oil is extracted from the cold water. The whole process takes up to 3 and a half hours.
Q- So, how many liters of oil can it extract from 500-600 kg of leaves stuffed in one tank?

It also depends on the quality of the leaves we grow on our organic farming land. What kind of fertilizers and compost is the farmer using? It gives around 300 ml to 800-900 ml of oil when extracted from 500–600 kg of leaves.
Q- Okay, so now the oil is extracted? What do you do with the remaining leaves?
With the remaining leaves after the oil has been extracted, we turn them into organic fertilizers for our organic farming land.
Q – After you have extracted the oil, do you directly sell it in the market, or do you have any tie-ups with an industrial group.?
After the whole perfume organic farming process, from cutting down the leaves to distilling the oil. We directly sell the oil to SH Kelkar Keva Group in Mumbai.
Q- What is the revenue gained after selling?
The market price for 1 kg oil is Rs. 11,500. So, we make it a point by selling after every three months, where we get around Rs. 3 Lakh.
Q – Are you planning to expand your perfume organic farming? What is the catchphrase of this entire setup?

Well, I started perfume organic farming back in 2019, when the first COVID hit. It feels good to say that we have come a long way, but still, there’s a mile to go on this organic farming venture.
Currently, we have 66 farmers working in the field for the whole process. Some of them are working on the Geranium plant, while others work on Lemon Grass, which is our new initiative for organic farming.
This requires a lot of effort, and it involves risks. We work on traditional perfume organic farming, ditching the agro-culture of technology.
Also, Yes, if someone wants to extract oil, we do it for them. Also, we grow Geranium plants for other farmers.
Q – Being into perfume organic farming, do you have any tips for others who wish to take on this project?
Well, you have to be a good farmer. From planting the Geranium plant to extracting the oil, it takes effort, time, and patience. If you wish to grow in the field of perfume organic farming, then be a good farmer and be committed to your duty.
